Kinder mit dichtem lockigem Haar putzen sich mit einer Bambuszahnbürste die Zähne

As a mom of two kids with curly hair and the founder of a company specializing in curl care, I know the challenges of daily hair care all too well. Curls need special attention, but that doesn't mean care has to be time-consuming or complicated, quite the opposite! For me it's essential that my kids' hair care is not only natural and gentle but also simple and quick.

Building confidence

Washing and caring for hair can become a beautiful ritual with mom or dad. It's so important how you talk to your kids about their hair. Your words shouldn't give the impression that their curls are difficult, negative or not right as they are.

Loving your own curls starts in childhood. It's essential that kids develop a positive self-image and experience their hair care as something nice and natural. That's why it's especially important to me that they never feel curl care is stressful or annoying. With the right approach and the right products, that's totally doable.

No tugging, natural products without artificial additives

It's especially important to me that my kids experience their hair care without frustration, without tugging, without artificial fragrances and without hormonal additives. With COSMOS-certified natural cosmetics we choose natural ingredients that are gentle and safe for sensitive children's hair.

Here I share my best tips and experience to make curl care a relaxed and pleasant ritual, for kids and parents alike.

Baby

For babies, it's enough to care for damp hair with a light, pure natural oil.

Toddler

For toddlers it's best to wash hair only with a gentle conditioner and, if needed, define and comb with a Leave-In. After a day at the playground with sand in their hair, you can cleanse your child's curls with a gentle shampoo and then complete your routine with our Leave-In for combing.

Kids

After washing with Afrolocke Shampoo and Conditioner, you can use the Leave-In to detangle curls without any tugging. Then, depending on the hair's needs, use an oil to seal and/or the Curl Styling Gel for definition.

The right products

Choosing the right products is key. For Afrolocke products we skip aggressive and harmful ingredients. So if some gets in the eyes, it's not a problem. We also went for a light, non-intrusive fragrance from essential oils which can have a calming effect on kids and fades quickly.

Wash day

Washing curls once a week with a natural, mild shampoo is enough. If more frequent washing is needed, you can use a conditioner instead of shampoo to wash (co-wash).

Wash day is the ideal moment to detangle curls. Curls should only be detangled when wet. To avoid tears and trauma during combing, use a wide-tooth comb or a brush made for curls (like Tangle Teezer, Denman Brush). Divide hair into sections, start at the ends and gently work your way up.

To dry, use an old T-shirt or microfiber towel, or let air dry. If a blow-dryer is needed, for example in winter, a diffuser is the gentlest option.

Between wash days

To keep things easy on wash day, you can use small rituals between wash days to minimize tangles and moisture loss.

With a natural Leave-In, curls can be detangled, cared for and defined between washes. Just dampen the hair with water from a spray bottle, work in the Leave-In and gently separate any knotted strands.

Protective styles (like braids or twists) look great and help curls stay less tangled. At night, protect your kids' hair with a satin pillowcase. Depending on hair length, curls can also be tied up at night with a satin scrunchie into a bun or pineapple.

Porosity

Knowing your kids' hair porosity can also save you time. In our blog post about porosity you'll find all the important facts.

Curls have had a bad reputation for far too long, and totally unfairly. Let's do it differently for the next generation and teach them how wonderful their curls are.
